Christopher Illa, Director of Bands

Mr. Illa graduated high school in 1998 from G. Holmes Braddock HS and then entered the Florida International University, School of Music. During his time at FIU he, along with two collaborators, composed the original FIU Fight Song. In the summer of 1999 he was a member of the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps placing 9th at the Drum Corp International World Championships. From 1999-2001 Mr. Illa attended Miami Dade College's Music Department and was voted FCMENC Chapter President.  

After a two year hiatus form school, Mr. Illa returned to Miami-Dade College for 2003-2005. During this time he was FCMENC Chapter Vice President and was awarded first place at the Annual Music Composition Contest in 2004 for the composition Journey. In 2005 he was named Miami-Dade College Music Student of the year and was awarded second place at the annual composition contest for the composition Symphony of an Anonymous Warrior.  

Mr. Illa then transferred to the University of Miami in 2005, where he was Drum Major for the Band of the Hour and Principal Trumpet for the Frost School of Music Symphonic Winds. In 2008, Mr. Illa was bestowed a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Miami and was then hired at Felix Varela High School as Director of Bands leading the students to achieve superior ratings with the Wind Ensemble, Concert Jazz Band and Marching Band, as well as much success at local and state competitions.  

Mr. Illa is a freelance trumpet performer, composer and a member of the Miami Wind Symphony. He was named the 2011 Rookie Teacher of the year at Felix Varela SHS and was named the 2012 Miami-Dade County Public School Region IV Rookie Teacher of the Year. He joined Coral Reef Senior High School in August of 2011 and has lead the Barracuda Band to Superior ratings at District Marching and Concert MPA's and State Solo & Ensemble MPA.
